Incubator

Postby FoolonFruity » Wed Jul 21, 2010 10:55 pm

A quick tutorial that describes an alternative for the well know tub in tub incubator. The price for building one of these incubators is almost the same, but I belief this one is far more easier in daily use.

However an Incubator is not necessary for a successful growth, it only speeds up the growth. you can start without a incubator by simply placing your jars in a box in a closet at room temperature. like this:

Hardware:
Styrofoam box You can get these boxes for free at your local fish market or Asia store.
Heating cable These cables are used in Aquarium and Terrarium, so available in a Pet store or cheap at eBay.
Thermostat Also used in Aquarium and Terrarium, available in a Pet store or cheap at eBay.
Presser point staples Available in every craftsman store.

Cut or drill an entrance point for the cable. I prefer to install the heating cable inside the lid.

Use the the staples to secure the cable inside the box.

Make sure to cover as much surface as possible, so the heat will be distribute evenly.

Now lead the sensor of your Thermostat to the center of the box. So, wen the box is closed it's in the middle of your jars and not above your jars.

Connect the heating cable with the thermostat that is outside the box and adjust the thermostat to the preferred temperature. Thats it! Once you incubator is at temperature there is no further maintains. Thanks to the thermostat the temperature inside your incubator will always be steady.

If this box incubator is getting to small for you, and you like to expand, you can simply use the same equipment in an old fridge to get a bigger incubator.
